Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB200X450S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB200X450S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø200mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB200X450S

The AirTAC SAILB200X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock in the back cover. Because this is a back-lock configuration, the spring-applied, air-released mechanism engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. In the 200mm bore class, it delivers a push force of 15708N and a pull force of 15080N at 0.5 MPa, making it suitable for heavy-load handling. The -S suffix indicates a built-in magnet for position sensing using AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic switches.

This unit features a carbon steel rod and PT tapered port threads. A key design trait is its variable air cushioning: the locker end utilizes a shorter 28mm cushion stroke compared to the 50mm cushion at the free end. The lock provides a static hold after the cylinder stops; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. To unlock, you supply air to the release port for automatic operation or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB200X450S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Heavy Lift Safety Hold

Secures large vertical loads in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops on heavy machinery.

shield

Press Clamping

Holds heavy workpieces firmly at the rod-in stroke end without consuming continuous pneumatic energy.

lock

Gate Retention

Locks industrial safety gates in the closed position, requiring an air signal to release and open.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB200X450S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 200mm bore when a large lifting mechanism requires a secure hold at the rod-in position without relying on continuous live air pressure. If your application demands slightly less force, stepping down to a 160mm bore provides 10053N of push force at 0.5 MPa. Conversely, if you need to hold the load at the extended rod-out position, the SAILF variant is required. Should your design require clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead of SAIL.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock, so an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is mandatory. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure. At a 450mm stroke, the moment arm on the 40mm carbon steel rod increases, requiring external guide rails to prevent excessive side-loading. Replacement matching requires bore 200, stroke 450, back lock position, PT ports, standard mountings (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2), and the -S magnet.

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB200X450S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 200mm bore cylinder generates 15708N of push force and 15080N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 21991N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end. It provides a static hold, not a dynamic brake. You unlock it automatically via an air release port or manually via a lever, and you must avoid fast-exhaust valves to prevent back-pressure release.
