Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000

The AirTAC SAILB40X1000 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock built into the back cover. This lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, holding the rod securely in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. With a 40mm bore, it delivers 879N of push force at 0.7MPa, making it suitable for moderate load-holding tasks.

The carbon steel rod provides durable operation, and the barrel utilizes an extruded aluminum profile with sensor grooves on both sides. Note that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 20mm, which is shorter than the 27mm cushion on the free end. The lock releases automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Hold on Power Loss

Secures a 40mm bore vertical lift in the retracted position automatically when air pressure drops, preventing uncontrolled descent.

conveyor_belt

Clamp-and-Hold at Stroke End

Holds a clamped workpiece securely at the retracted stroke end without consuming continuous air, saving energy during machining.

shield

Safety Hold on Lifts and Gates

Keeps a raised safety gate locked at the retracted terminal during a power outage, requiring an air signal or manual lever to unlock.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore cylinder for applications requiring 879N of push force at 0.7MPa; if your application requires less force, a 32mm bore is unavailable in the SAIL series so you must step up, while heavier loads up to 1374N push require stepping up to the 50mm bore. Select SAILB when the load must be held at the retracted stroke end, and SAILF when it must be held at the extended end. Because this model has a 1000mm stroke, which exceeds the 1200mm maximum standard stroke limit for this bore but requires a long extension, you must use external guide rails to prevent side-load damage to the rod seals.

The lock holds only at the stroke end; if you need clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke position, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. For valve selection, do not use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. Replacement matches: 40mm bore, 1000mm stroke, back locker, PT port thread, and no magnet (-S not specified).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X1000 FAQ

At a 0.7MPa operating pressure, the 40mm bore provides 879N of push force and 528N of pull force. The maximum push force is 1130N at 0.9MPa.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold, not a dynamic brake. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but back-pressure on the locker side can release it, so avoid fast-exhaust valves.
