Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X160

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X160 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X160

The AirTAC SAILB40X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This locking mechanism engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever release air is cut, dropping the load safely without relying on live pressure. In the 40mm bore class, it delivers a 0.5 MPa push force of 628N and a pull force of 528N.

Because the lock occupies the rear endcap, the variable air cushion on that locker end is shortened to 20mm, compared to the 27mm cushion on the free front end. The standard carbon steel piston rod provides durable service, and the extruded aluminum barrel is dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X160 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures a lifted vertical load in the fully retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops without needing continuous air pressure.

lock

Retracted Safety Hold

Keeps the rod locked safely inside the cylinder at the back stroke end, maintaining a clear workspace when the machine is idle.

conveyor_belt

Gate Stop Mechanism

Holds a conveyor diverter gate firmly shut at the retracted terminal until an air signal releases the spring lock for operation.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X160 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 40mm bore model when your application requires a fail-safe hold of a 628N load at the fully retracted position; if you need a higher push force, stepping up to the 50mm bore yields 982N at 0.5 MPa. Choose SAILB for back-cover retracted-end holding, or switch to SAILF if the load must be secured at the extended stroke end. If your design requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than a terminal end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

For reliable operation, do not use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. When matching replacements, verify the 160mm stroke, back locker position, 1/4 PT port threads, and your required mounting style. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, always add an independent safety measure beyond the pneumatic lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X160 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 40mm bore provides a push force of 628N and a pull force of 528N. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 879N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is released automatically via air pressure or manually via a lever.
