Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X450S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X450S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X450S

The AirTAC SAILB40X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This lock engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever release air is cut, maintaining load position without consuming live pressure. Equipped with a magnetic piston (-S), it supports position detection via AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state sensors.

Providing 879N of push force at 0.7MPa, this 40mm bore model uses a 16mm carbon steel rod and PT tapered port threads. Because the lock occupies the rear end-cap, the variable air cushion on that locker end is notably shorter (20mm) compared to the free end (27mm). The lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake, meaning it secures the rod only after the cylinder has fully stopped.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa628 N528 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X450S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures lifted loads in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops without requiring continuous air pressure.

shield

Safety Gate Interlock

Holds safety gates or guards closed at the stroke end, releasing only when control air is deliberately supplied to the unlock port.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains static clamping force on a workpiece at the end of the stroke while air pressure is removed from the system.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X450S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore when an application requires 879N push force at 0.7MPa; step up to a 63mm bore if you need 2182N, or down if lower forces are acceptable. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held in the retracted position, and choose SAILF if the extended end requires holding. If your process demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

For this 450mm stroke, ensure external guide rails are used to prevent excessive side-loading on the 16mm carbon steel rod. To maintain lock integrity, never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the mechanism; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load staying retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure beyond the lock. Replacement units must match the 40mm bore, 450mm stroke, PT port, and -S magnet specifications.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X450S FAQ

At 0.7MPa operating pressure, this 40mm bore cylinder generates 879N of push force and 528N of pull force. At 0.5MPa, the push force is 628N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and cannot brake a moving rod. Unlocking occurs automatically via air supply or manually via a lever.
