Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X500

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X500 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X500

The AirTAC SAILB40X500 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because it is a SAILB variant, the spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. It safely holds the load without live pressure, delivering 628N of push force and 528N of pull force at 0.5 MPa. The standard carbon steel rod handles daily industrial wear, and the PT tapered port threads ensure a tight pneumatic connection.

This 40mm bore unit travels a 500mm stroke and includes variable air cushions on both ends. The locker-end cushion measures 20mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 27mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking hardware. For position sensing, you can add an -S magnet to use CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors along the dual-side barrel grooves.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X500 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position during a power loss, using the mechanical lock to prevent sudden drops.

Clamp and Hold

Maintains a tight clamping force at the stroke end without consuming continuous air pressure.

Safety Gate Hold

Keeps safety gates and access doors firmly locked in the closed position until the release air is supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X500 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore if your application requires 628N push force at 0.5 MPa; stepping down is not an option since SAIL starts at bore 40, but stepping up to a 50mm bore provides 982N if your load demands more. Select this SAILB configuration when you need the rod held securely in the retracted position. If your machine requires holding the load mid-stroke, skip this model and use a BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. Remember that the SAIL lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

To safely maintain the lock, do not use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the mechanism; utilize an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure. For this 500mm stroke, use a proper guide to support the rod and prevent excessive side-loading. Replacement matches require a 40mm bore, 500mm stroke, back locker position, PT port, and standard mounting.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X500 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, the 40mm bore provides 628N of push force and 528N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 879N.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages only at the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It holds the load statically without live pressure. You can unlock it automatically by supplying release air or by using the manual release lever.
