Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 600mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600

The AirTAC SAILB40X600 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock built into the back cover. This lock engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever the release air is cut, maintaining the load position without requiring live pressure. Equipped with a 16mm carbon steel rod, it provides 879N of push force at 0.7MPa.

A key design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 20mm, which is shorter than the 27mm cushion on the free end. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops; it is not a dynamic brake. For position sensing, adding a magnet allows the use of CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors in the dual-side barrel grooves.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a raised load securely at the retracted stroke end during a power or air loss event, preventing sudden drops on vertical actuators.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Hold

Maintains the retracted position of a diverter or gate mechanism without consuming continuous air pressure.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Secures a workpiece at the end of the stroke cycle, ensuring the part remains fixed even if the main air supply fluctuates.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore if your application requires 879N of push force at 0.7MPa, stepping down from a 50mm bore (1374N) for a lighter load, or up from a smaller cylinder if a standard SAI lacks the necessary safety hold. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be secured in the retracted position. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Because this unit features a 600mm stroke, incorporating an external guide is recommended to prevent excessive side-loading on the carbon steel rod. Remember that the lock holds statically at the stroke end, not mid-travel. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. If human safety depends on the load remaining suspended, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement matches require 40mm bore, 600mm stroke, back locker, PT port threads, and your chosen mounting style.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600 FAQ

At a 0.7MPa operating pressure, the 40mm bore provides 879N of push force and 528N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake. Unlocking is achieved by supplying release air to the port or using the manual release lever.
