Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 600mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600S

The AirTAC SAILB40X600-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it safely holds the rod-in position without requiring continuous live air pressure. This 40mm bore generates 628N of push force and 528N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, making it suitable for moderate load-holding tasks.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position feedback and is fully compatible with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state sensors. A notable design detail is the variable air cushion: the locker-end cushion measures 20mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 27mm cushion on the free end to physically accommodate the locking mechanism. The standard carbon steel rod provides durable service, and fluid must be filtered to 40um.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa628 N528 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures a raised load in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops without needing continuous air pressure.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Stop Gate

Holds a pneumatic gate firmly closed at the rod-in stroke end to halt pallets, ensuring the load remains blocked until the release air is restored.

factory

Clamp and Secure

Locks a workpiece at the retracted terminal position for machining, providing a rigid hold without relying on live pressure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 40mm bore when your application requires 628N push force at 0.5MPa; if your load demands more holding strength, stepping up to the 50mm bore yields 982N push force. Choose this SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted (rod-in) position, whereas a SAILF variant is needed to hold the extended position. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

For safe operation, remember this is a static holding lock that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, and always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, because back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. With a 600mm stroke, use a side-load guide to prevent rod deflection. Replacement requires matching the 40mm bore, 600mm stroke, back locker, 1/4 PT port, and mounting style.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X600S FAQ

At 0.5MPa, this 40mm bore cylinder provides 628N of push force and 528N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 879N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging automatically when the rod reaches the retracted stroke end. It is a static hold, not a mid-stroke clamp or dynamic brake. You can unlock it by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
