Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000

The AirTAC SAILB50X1000 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock sits in the back cover, it securely holds the rod at the fully retracted stroke end, ensuring loads remain safely suspended without relying on continuous live air pressure. Operating at 0.5 MPa, this 50mm bore generates 982N of push thrust and 825N of pull thrust, making it well-suited for robust vertical lifting tasks.

A key mechanical detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end measures 20mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 30mm cushion found on the free end. This lock is strictly a static holding device that engages after the piston stops at the stroke terminal; it will not arrest a moving rod. For position detection, you can add a magnet for CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors, though this base configuration ships without one.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Maintains elevated loads securely at the retracted rod-in position during a sudden power loss, preventing gravity-driven crashes.

conveyor_belt

Overhead Conveyor Stops

Locks a conveyor gate or actuator in the closed retracted state without consuming continuous compressed air.

shield

Safety Guard Positioning

Holds a protective barrier firmly retracted during machine operation, requiring an intentional air pulse to unlock and move.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this specific back-lock model when your machinery requires the load to be held securely at the rod-in position, whereas a SAILF variant would be necessary to hold the extended rod-out position. If your application demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, you must step up to the AirTAC BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. The 50mm bore offers 982N push force at 0.5 MPa; if your load requires less force, the 40mm bore provides 628N, or step up to the 63mm bore for 1559N if greater thrust is needed.

Because this model features a 1000mm stroke, using a side-load guide is highly recommended to prevent rod binding and premature seal wear. To maintain lock integrity, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder; back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock, so always utilize an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load remaining suspended, implement an independent mechanical safety measure alongside this cylinder. Replacement requires matching the 50mm bore, 1000mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and your chosen mounting style.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X1000 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 50mm bore provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the fully retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold after the cylinder stops and is released automatically via air supply or manually via a lever; it does not clamp mid-stroke.
