Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160S

The AirTAC SAILB50X160-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This safety mechanism engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever the release air is cut, delivering 982N of thrust at 0.5 MPa without requiring live pressure. The integrated -S magnet enables precise position detection using AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state sensors.

Because the lock occupies the rear endcap, the variable air cushion on that locker end is shortened to 20mm compared to the 30mm cushion on the free front end. The cylinder bore is 50mm with a 1/4 PT port, a 20mm carbon steel rod, and an M16x1.5 rod thread. It operates at speeds between 30 and 800mm/s, providing reliable power-loss safety for vertical and suspended loads.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a lifted load securely in the retracted position during a sudden air pressure loss, preventing uncontrolled drops on vertical actuators.

lock

Clamp and Hold

Maintains gripping force on a workpiece at the end of the stroke without consuming continuous compressed air, saving energy during machining cycles.

shield

Gate and Guard Locking

Secures safety gates or heavy machine guards in the closed position by locking the rod at the retracted terminal until an air signal releases it.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50mm bore when an application requires 982N of push force at 0.5 MPa, stepping up from a 40mm bore that provides 628N, or down from a 63mm bore offering 1559N. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position; if the extended position needs holding, the SAILF variant is required instead. For applications demanding mid-stroke clamping rather than end-of-stroke holding, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

This lock is a static holding device that engages only after the piston stops at the stroke terminal, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the spring-driven lock pin; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, install an independent mechanical safety measure as well. Replacement units must match the 50mm bore, 160mm stroke, PT port thread, back locker position, and -S magnet specification.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X160S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 50mm bore cylinder provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is released automatically via an air signal or manually via a lever; it does not clamp at mid-stroke.
