Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X200S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X200S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 200mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X200S

The AirTAC SAILB50X200-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it securely holds the rod in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. In the event of a power loss or pressure drop, the spring-driven lock pin automatically secures the carbon steel rod, ensuring your vertical loads remain safely suspended. You can release the lock pneumatically via the air port or manually using the override lever.

This 50mm bore model delivers 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, peaking at a 200 kgf maximum thrust at 1.0 MPa. It features a standard magnet for position sensing via CMSE reed or DMSE electronic switches. A key design nuance is the variable air cushion: the cushion at the locker end measures 20mm, intentionally shorter than the 30mm cushion at the free end, optimizing deceleration within the confined lock space.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X200S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures elevated platforms or lifting jigs at the retracted stroke end, preventing falls when air pressure is removed.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Flow Stop

Acts as a pneumatic stop gate that locks firmly in the rod-in position to halt product flow without consuming air.

shield

Power-Loss Safety

Automatically engages the mechanical lock during an air supply failure to safely freeze a robotic arm or guard in its retracted state.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X200S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50mm bore when your application requires 982N of thrust at 0.5 MPa; if you need less force, the 40mm bore provides 628N, while the 63mm bore steps up to 1559N. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held at the retracted (rod-in) position. If your mechanism requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, you must switch to the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

Remember that the SAIL lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake that stops a moving rod. For reliable operation, avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load remaining suspended, add an independent safety measure. To replace this unit, match the 50mm bore, 200mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X200S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, this 50mm bore cylinder provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At its maximum rated operating pressure of 1.0 MPa, it delivers a maximum thrust of 200 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and does not clamp at mid-stroke. You can unlock it automatically by supplying release air or manually via the release lever.
