Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X350

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X350 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 350mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X350

The AirTAC SAILB50X350 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock inside the back cover. Because it is a SAILB variant, the spring-applied, air-released lock engages precisely when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. This mechanism safely holds a load in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. With a 50mm bore, it generates 982N of thrust at 0.5 MPa and 1374N at 0.7 MPa.

A key design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end measures 20mm, which is shorter than the 30mm cushion found on the free end. The lock itself is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. For position sensing, an optional -S magnet version can be ordered to work seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X350 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated masses on power loss by locking the rod at the retracted stroke end, preventing sudden drops in lifting rigs.

lock

Power-Off Safety Clamp

Maintains a tight grip on workpieces at the rod-in position during pneumatic pressure loss, ensuring the load stays firmly in place.

conveyor_belt

Gate Stop Mechanism

Holds a diverter gate securely closed at the back stroke end without consuming continuous air, unlocking automatically via air release.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X350 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 50mm bore actuator when an application requires a reliable static hold at the rod-in position and a mid-range thrust of 982N at 0.5 MPa. If your machine requires higher force, stepping up to the 63mm bore yields 1559N at 0.5 MPa; if less force is acceptable, the 40mm bore provides 628N. Choose this SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be secured upon retraction. If the mechanical lock needs to clamp the rod at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than at the end, the AirTAC BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

When integrating this 350mm stroke model, account for side-load dynamics by utilizing external guide rails to prevent rod wear. To ensure the lock functions safely, never use a fast-exhaust valve; back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock, so an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. Additionally, if human safety depends on the load remaining suspended, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement matches require verifying the 50mm bore, 350mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the chosen mounting style from the full ISO 15552 set.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X350 FAQ

The 50mm bore generates a push force of 982N at 0.5 MPa and 1374N at 0.7 MPa. The pull force is 825N at 0.5 MPa.

The SAILB50X350 features a spring-applied, air-released lock in the back cover that holds the rod statically at the retracted stroke end. It does not clamp at mid-stroke. Unlocking is achieved automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
