Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450

The AirTAC SAILB50X450 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. This spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, ensuring the load remains safely held without requiring live air pressure. It delivers a push force of 982N and a pull force of 825N at 0.5 MPa, utilizing a 20mm carbon steel rod and 1/4 PT tapered ports.

A key mechanical detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 30mm, which is longer than the 20mm cushion found on the non-locker end, ensuring smooth deceleration before the lock engages. Remember that this lock functions purely as a static holding device after the rod stops; it is not a dynamic brake. For mid-stroke clamping requirements, the BSAI clamp-lock series is the correct choice instead.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting actuators.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Stop Arm

Holds a pneumatic stop arm firmly in the retracted end position during power loss to maintain lane isolation without continuous air supply.

shield

Safety Gate Hold

Locks a machine access gate in the open, retracted position until the release port receives air, ensuring operator safety during maintenance.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50mm bore when an application requires 982N of push force at 0.5MPa, which is a step up from the 40mm bore's 628N but lighter than the 63mm bore's 1559N. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be secured in the retracted position; choose SAILF if the extended end requires holding. Because the stroke is 450mm, incorporating an external guide is recommended to prevent excessive side-loading on the rod.

When integrating this cylinder, strictly avoid using a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the spring-applied lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. To match this unit for a replacement, verify the 50mm bore, 450mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and standard carbon steel rod. Note that because this configuration lacks the -S magnet option, it will not support CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, always add an independent mechanical safety measure alongside the lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450 FAQ

At an operating pressure of 0.5 MPa, the SAILB50X450 generates a push force of 982N and a pull force of 825N. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It provides a static hold after the cylinder stops, and you can unlock it automatically via the air release port or by using the manual release lever.
