Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450S

The AirTAC SAILB50X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock in the back cover. It delivers 982N of push force at 0.5 MPa and features a carbon steel piston rod with an M16x1.5 thread. Because this is a back-lock variant, the spring-applied, air-released lock engages only when the rod reaches the fully retracted stroke end, holding the load securely without consuming live air.

This 50mm bore unit includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position sensing using AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches. The variable air cushion at the locker end is 20mm, intentionally shorter than the 30mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking hardware. The lock releases automatically by supplying air to the release port, or manually via the lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a raised vertical load safely at the retracted end during a sudden air pressure loss or maintenance shutdown.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Snubbing

Locks a tensioning arm in the retracted position to safely relieve belt tension without maintaining live air pressure.

shield

Machine Guarding

Secures a heavy safety gate in the closed position by holding the rod at the retracted terminal until unlocked by air.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50mm bore when an application requires 982N of thrust at 0.5 MPa; step down to a 40mm bore for 628N, or up to a 63mm bore for 1559N. Select SAILB to hold the load at the retracted stroke end, or SAILF to secure it extended. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than a stroke-end hold, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

For this 450mm stroke, external guide rails are recommended to prevent excessive side loading on the rod seals. The lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake. Avoid fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement specs: 50mm bore, 450mm stroke, PT tapered port (1/4), magnetic piston, standard mounting.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X450S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 50mm bore cylinder provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released. It engages statically only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It does not brake a moving rod or clamp mid-stroke. You unlock it by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
