Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X600S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X600S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 600mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X600S

The AirTAC SAILB50X600-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air automatically drives a lock pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without relying on live pressure. This 50 mm bore generates 982 N of push force and 825 N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, utilizing a 20 mm carbon steel rod and a 1/4 PT port.

This model includes a standard magnet (-S) for direct compatibility with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. To accommodate the locking hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 20 mm, which is shorter than the 30 mm cushion found on the free end. You can unlock the rod automatically by supplying air to the release port, or by using the manual release lever during setup.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X600S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Power-Off Hold

Secures lifted loads in the retracted position automatically during a compressed air failure, preventing sudden drops.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stop and Hold

Maintains a retracted stopper position on a 600 mm cycle without consuming continuous air pressure.

shield

Safety Gate Interlock

Keeps heavy machine guards safely pulled back and locked until the release air is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X600S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50 mm bore when your application requires up to 982 N of push force at 0.5 MPa; stepping down to a 40 mm bore drops the push force to 628 N, while stepping up to a 63 mm bore raises it to 1559 N. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position, and choose a SAILF variant instead if the extended position needs to be held. If your machine requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, use the AirTAC BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

Remember that this lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves with this cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. For any safety-critical application where human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Since this unit has a 600 mm stroke, using a guide rail or external load-bearing structure is recommended to prevent excessive side-load wear on the rod seals.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X600S FAQ

This double-acting 50 mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 982 N and a pull force of 825 N at 0.5 MPa. At the maximum operating pressure of 1.0 MPa, it delivers a maximum push force of 200 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It only engages after the cylinder stops, not mid-stroke, and can be released automatically via air pressure or manually via a lever.
