Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X75

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X75 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 75mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X75

The AirTAC SAILB50X75 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securing the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. It generates 982N of push thrust at 0.5 MPa, making it well-suited for medium-duty holding tasks.

This model features a 1/4 PT port and utilizes variable air cushions at both ends, though the cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 20 mm compared to the 30 mm on the free end. You can unlock the rod automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever. For position sensing, the barrel includes sensor grooves compatible with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic switches when a magnet is specified.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X75 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Safety

Secures lifted platens at the retracted stroke end during a power loss, preventing gravity-driven drops without needing continuous air pressure.

lock

End-Stroke Clamping

Holds a workpiece firmly in place once the cylinder reaches the back terminal position, ensuring stability during heavy machining operations.

conveyor_belt

Gate Holding

Locks heavy safety gates or pivoting conveyor arms in the closed position mechanically, eliminating drift caused by fluctuating air supply.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X75 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 50 mm bore cylinder when an application requires 982N of push force at 0.5 MPa, stepping down from a 63 mm bore (1559N) if your load is lighter, or stepping up if you need the 1374N available at 0.7 MPa. Choose the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held at the retracted rod-in position. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative instead.

Remember that this lock engages statically after the piston stops at the stroke terminal; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock—always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For safety-critical vertical loads that could endanger personnel if they drop, install an additional independent safety measure. Replacement matches require a 50 mm bore, 75 mm stroke, back locker position, PT ports, and standard mounting options like FA, FB, or TC.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X75 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, this 50 mm bore cylinder provides 982N of push thrust and 825N of pull thrust. If operating pressure increases to 0.7 MPa, the push force rises to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it engages automatically when the rod reaches the retracted stroke end and air pressure is cut. To unlock, you supply air to the release port for automatic release or use the manual lever. It holds statically at the stroke end only, not mid-stroke.
