Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X1000S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X1000S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 1000mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X1000S

The AirTAC SAILB63X1000-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure. It delivers 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, utilizing a PT tapered 3/8 port. The -S suffix equips the piston with a magnet for direct compatibility with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors.

Unlike a plain SAI cylinder, this SAIL variant provides true power-failure safety, though its locking action is strictly a static hold that engages after the rod stops, not a dynamic brake for moving loads. The variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 21mm compared to the 30mm cushion on the free end, a specific design concession to house the lock mechanism. You can unlock the rod automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X1000S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Prevents elevated loads from crashing down under power loss by mechanically locking the rod in the retracted position.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stopper Hold

Maintains a fixed raised stop position on a conveyor line without continuously consuming compressed air.

Clamp and Hold

Secures a workpiece at the end of the retraction stroke during machining or assembly processes.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X1000S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when you need 1559N of thrust at 0.5 MPa; step down to a 50mm bore if 982N is sufficient, or step up to an 80mm bore for 2513N. Select this SAILB configuration specifically because the load must be held at the retracted stroke end. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke position, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

For safe operation, avoid using a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Furthermore, if human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure. At a 1000mm stroke, the extended rod is highly susceptible to bending moments, so external guide rails are strongly recommended to prevent side-load damage. To replace this unit, match the 63mm bore, 1000mm stroke, back locker position, PT port thread, and -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X1000S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 63mm bore provides 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 2182N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end. It engages after the piston stops and is unlocked automatically via air supply or manually via a lever; it does not brake a moving rod.
