Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X160S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X160S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X160S

The AirTAC SAILB63X160-S is a double-acting, single-rod ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air automatically drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. In the 63mm bore class, this actuator generates 1559N of thrust and 1402N of pull at 0.5MPa, making it well-suited for medium-duty holding tasks. Unlocking is achieved by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual override lever.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position detection using AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors. As a true extruded-aluminum profile cylinder, it is dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552 mounting interfaces. Note that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 21mm, intentionally shorter than the 30mm cushion on the free end, to accommodate the locking hardware. The lock provides a static hold after the piston stops; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X160S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures elevated loads at the retracted stroke end instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops in lifting mechanisms.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains clamping force on workpieces at the end of the stroke without consuming continuous compressed air.

shield

Safety Gate Locking

Keeps heavy safety gates or guards firmly closed in the retracted position until the release air is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X160S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 63mm bore cylinder when an application requires maintaining a vertical or suspended load at the retracted position during a power loss. If your mechanism only needs to hold the load at the extended stroke end, choose the SAILF variant instead. For operations that require clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than the stroke terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice. If a smaller force class suffices, a 50mm bore provides 982N of push force at 0.5MPa, whereas stepping up to an 80mm bore yields 2513N.

When replacing this actuator, verify the 160mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port thread, and the -S magnet option. The operating speed ranges from 30 to 800mm/s. A critical pneumatic red-line: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder. You must use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, because back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. Furthermore, if human safety depends on the load staying up, always add an independent mechanical safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X160S FAQ

At 0.5MPa, the 63mm bore generates 1559N of push thrust and 1402N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 2182N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it engages automatically when air pressure is cut, holding the rod securely at the retracted stroke end. It is a static hold, not a dynamic brake, and unlocks via air supply to the release port or a manual lever.
