Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 400mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400

The AirTAC SAILB63X400 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure. It delivers a robust 1559N push force at 0.5MPa and utilizes a PT 3/8 port.

This model provides variable air cushioning at both ends, though the locker-end cushion is notably shorter at 21mm compared to the 30mm on the free end. For position sensing, you can pair the magnetic piston with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors, though this specific configuration ships without a magnet. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops, rather than a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon loss of air pressure, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting jigs.

shield

Power Failure Safety

Maintains a safely clamped state during unexpected plant power outages or emergency stops, holding the rod-in position until air is restored.

precision_manufacturing

End-of-Stroke Clamp

Locks a workpiece firmly at the retracted terminal for precise machining or welding operations without relying on continuous fluid pressure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when a 50mm bore (offering 982N push at 0.5MPa) lacks sufficient thrust, but an 80mm bore (2513N at 0.5MPa) would be excessive overkill. Select the SAILB variant specifically when the load must be secured in the retracted, rod-in position; choose SAILF instead if your application requires holding the extended rod-out stroke end. If your process demands locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke position rather than the stroke terminal, step up to the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

At a 400mm stroke, lateral forces become a significant factor, so implementing a dedicated external guide is highly recommended to prevent rod binding. Remember that the SAIL lock is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp. Furthermore, avoid using fast-exhaust valves with this cylinder; always select an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock. For any safety-critical vertical lift, always add an independent mechanical safety measure beyond the pneumatic lock itself.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400 FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, this 63mm bore cylinder generates 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force. At the maximum rated pressure of 0.9MPa, the push force increases to 2805N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it engages automatically via spring force when air is cut off, holding the rod securely at the retracted stroke end. To unlock, you supply air to the release port for automatic retraction or use the manual release lever.
