Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 400mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400S

The AirTAC SAILB63X400-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, it automatically secures the rod at the retracted stroke end whenever release air is cut, holding a pull load of 1402N at 0.5MPa without requiring live pressure. Unlocking is achieved by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual override lever.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position detection with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. The variable air cushion at the locker end measures 21mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 30mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the lock mechanism. A critical installation note: you must use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve rather than a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Retract Safety

Holds a lowered load securely at the retracted stroke end on power loss, preventing sudden drops without needing continuous air pressure.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Hold

Locks a stopped actuator in the retracted position during conveyor maintenance or pausing, ensuring the mechanism stays safely out of the way.

build

Clamp and Hold

Secures a workpiece by holding the cylinder retracted after the clamping force is applied, maintaining pressure statically during power loss.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when a 50mm bore (825N pull at 0.5MPa) is insufficient or a 80mm bore (2268N pull at 0.5MPa) is oversized. Select the SAILB back-cover variant to hold the rod in the retracted position; choose SAILF instead if your load must be secured at the extended stroke end. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a static stroke-end hold, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. Remember that this lock engages only after the cylinder stops and is not a dynamic brake. For human-safety critical loads, add an independent safety measure. To replace this unit, match the 63mm bore, 400mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the -S magnet option. Because the stroke is 400mm, ensure adequate side-load support and use a guide rail to prevent rod bending.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X400S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, the 63mm bore provides 1559N of push thrust and 1402N of pull thrust. At the maximum operating pressure of 1.0 MPa, it delivers up to 318 kgf.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold without live pressure. You can unlock it automatically by supplying release air or manually via the lever.
