Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X450S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X450S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X450S

The AirTAC SAILB63X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it securely holds the load in the rod-in position without requiring continuous live air pressure. Equipped with a -S magnet, it supports position sensing via AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches. Delivering a 0.5 MPa push force of 1559 N and a pull force of 1402 N, it operates at speeds between 30 and 800 mm/s.

A key design trait is the variable air cushioning, which measures 21 mm at the locker end compared to 30 mm at the free end, ensuring smooth deceleration before the lock engages. The carbon steel rod provides robust durability, and the PT port threads ensure a sealed pneumatic connection. Remember that this lock is a static holding device for use after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X450S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a lifted load securely at the retracted rod-in position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops.

shield

Clamp and Hold

Maintains constant clamping pressure on a workpiece at the stroke end without consuming continuous air.

lock

Gate and Guard Locking

Keeps heavy safety gates or machine guards firmly closed and locked in the retracted position.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X450S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 63 mm bore model when an application requires holding a 1559 N load at the rod-in position; if less force is needed, a 50 mm bore offers 982 N, while an 80 mm bore steps up to 2513 N. Choose this SAILB configuration specifically for back-cover locking at the retracted end. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead. For replacement, verify the 450 mm stroke, 3/8 port, PT thread, back locker position, and -S magnet.

Because the 450 mm stroke creates an extended lever arm, adding external guide rails to counter side-load deflection is highly recommended. To maintain lock integrity, never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the mechanism; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For human-safety critical lifting applications, install an independent mechanical safety measure as a backup.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X450S FAQ

At a 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 63 mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 1559 N and a pull force of 1402 N. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 2182 N.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold after the rod stops and can be released automatically via air pressure or manually via a lever.
