Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500

The AirTAC SAILB63X500 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it securely holds the rod-in position without requiring continuous live air pressure. Delivering a pull force of 1402N at 0.5MPa, it provides robust load management for vertical or suspended masses.

This 500mm stroke model incorporates a carbon steel rod and PT tapered port threads. The variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 21mm compared to 30mm on the free end, ensuring deceleration does not interfere with the locking mechanism. The lock releases automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but note that back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally lift the lock, so avoid fast-exhaust valves.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops without relying on continuous air pressure.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Keeps heavy safety gates firmly locked in the closed position until the release air is actively supplied to the locker port.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stopper

Holds a stopped pallet firmly at the end of the retracted stroke while operators load or unload materials safely.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when a 50mm bore (825N pull at 0.5MPa) lacks the lifting capacity, but a 80mm bore (2268N pull) is physically oversized. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held in the retracted position; if you need to secure the rod when extended, the SAILF variant is required instead. For applications requiring clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end static hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

When replacing this unit, verify the 63mm bore, 500mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and absence of a magnet. Because this model features a 500mm stroke, external guide rails should be used to prevent excessive side-loading on the carbon steel rod. Remember that the lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake, so safety-critical loads require an independent mechanical stop. Use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve to prevent back-pressure from releasing the lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500 FAQ

At 0.5MPa, the push force is 1559N and the pull force is 1402N. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 2182N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages after the cylinder stops and is released by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
