Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø63mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500S

The AirTAC SAILB63X500-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. It delivers 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force at 0.5MPa. The spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, ensuring the load remains securely held without relying on continuous live air pressure. This -S variant includes a magnet for position sensing.

Because the lock occupies the back cover, the variable air cushion on that locker end is shorter at 21mm compared to 30mm on the free end. The cylinder uses a carbon steel rod with an M16x1.5 thread and PT tapered ports. You can release the lock automatically by supplying air to the release port, or manually via the lever. For position feedback, the integrated magnet works seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a lifted payload securely at the retracted stroke end during a power loss event, preventing sudden drops.

shield

Clamp and Hold

Maintains constant clamping force on a workpiece at the rod-in position without consuming continuous air supply.

lock

Gate Positioning

Secures safety gates or heavy doors in the closed position mechanically, releasing only when control air is applied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 63mm bore when you need more force than the 50mm bore provides 982N push at 0.5MPa, but do not require the heavier 2513N thrust of the 80mm version. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held at the rod-in position; choose SAILF instead if the extended end requires holding. If your application needs to freeze the rod at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a terminal end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

Remember that this lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. At 500mm of stroke, the extended rod is susceptible to side-loading, so external guide rails should be used to prevent binding. Always add an independent safety measure if human safety depends on the suspended load. Replacement matches require 63mm bore, 500mm stroke, back locker, PT ports, and the -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB63X500S FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, this 63mm bore cylinder provides 1559N of push force and 1402N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 2182N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It unlocks automatically via air pressure to the release port or manually via a lever, but it cannot clamp at mid-stroke.
