Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 400mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400S

The AirTAC SAILB80X400-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock built into the back cover. Cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, holding the load securely at the retracted stroke end without live pressure. It delivers 2513N push and 2268N pull force at 0.5MPa, making it a robust choice for heavy load-holding tasks.

This -S variant includes a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors. The variable air cushion at the locker end is 22.5mm, deliberately shorter than the 36mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the lock hardware. You can unlock automatically by supplying air to the release port, or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Holds a raised vertical load safely at the retracted stroke end on the locker side during a power loss, preventing sudden drops.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Stop Gate

Locks a heavy stop gate in the retracted position without consuming live air, maintaining a clear path until release air is supplied.

shield

Safety Guard Lock

Keeps a machine safety guard firmly closed and locked at the rod-in terminal, requiring an intentional air release signal to open.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80mm bore when you need higher force than the 63mm option (1559N push at 0.5MPa) but do not require the 3927N push of the 100mm version. Select the SAILB back-cover lock specifically when the load must be held in the retracted, rod-in position. If your application requires holding at the extended rod-out position, choose the SAILF front-cover variant instead. For locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead of this stroke-end lock.

The lock is a static holding device that engages after the rod stops, not a dynamic brake for moving loads. Never use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve because back-pressure on the locker side can accidentally release the lock. At 400mm stroke, use proper guide rails to manage side loads and prevent binding. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. Replacement match: 80mm bore, 400mm stroke, back locker, PT port, -S magnet, and standard ISO 15552 mountings.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X400S FAQ

At 0.5MPa, this 80mm bore cylinder provides 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 3518N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover. It statically holds the rod only at the retracted stroke end after the cylinder stops. It does not clamp at mid-stroke or act as a moving brake. Unlock it automatically via air supply or manually via the release lever.
