Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X450

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X450 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 450mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X450

The AirTAC SAILB80X450 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This mechanism secures the rod specifically at the retracted stroke end, providing reliable load holding without requiring continuous live air pressure. With a 25 mm carbon steel rod and a 3/8 PT port, it delivers a 0.5 MPa push force of 2513 N and a pull force of 2268 N.

Because the lock occupies the back end, the variable air cushion on that side is shortened to 22.5 mm compared to the 36 mm cushion on the free front end. The lock engages statically after the piston stops at the stroke terminal; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. You can release the lock automatically via its dedicated air port or manually using the integrated lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X450 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Retract Safety

Holds a lifted payload securely in the retracted position during a sudden air pressure loss, preventing uncontrolled downward drift on vertical actuators.

shield

Clamp and Hold

Maintains clamping force at the retracted stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air, saving energy while the workpiece is secured.

conveyor_belt

Gate Positioning

Locks a diverter or gate in the retracted terminal position to ensure stable flow control until an intentional air signal releases the mechanism.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X450 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80 mm bore when an application requires 2513 N of push force at 0.5 MPa, stepping up from a 63 mm bore (1559 N) or down from a 100 mm bore (3927 N). Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held safely in the retracted position; if you need the rod secured while extended, the SAILF variant is required instead. For clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

This 450 mm stroke requires external guide rails to prevent excessive side-loading on the rod seals. Remember that the lock is a static holding device, not a mid-stroke clamp. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. If human safety depends on the load staying retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement units must match the 80 mm bore, 450 mm stroke, 3/8 PT port, and desired mounting (such as FA, LB, or TC).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X450 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 80 mm bore provides a push force of 2513 N and a pull force of 2268 N. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 3518 N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It holds statically after stopping and is released by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
