Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 80mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80

The AirTAC SAILB80X80 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock built into the back cover. This lock engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end when release air is cut, meaning loads remain safely parked even after a total loss of supply pressure. In the 80mm bore class, it generates 3518N of push force at 0.7MPa, making it well suited for heavy vertical lifting tasks.

The cylinder features a 25mm carbon steel rod and uses a 3/8 PT port. A variable air cushion decelerates the piston at both ends, but the locker-end cushion is notably shorter at 22.5mm compared to the 36mm free-end cushion. The lock itself is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. To release the load, you can supply air to the release port for automatic unlocking or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a raised load securely at the retracted end during a sudden air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on lifting platforms.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Pallet Stop

Locks a stopper pin in the retracted position to hold heavy pallets in place without consuming continuous live air pressure.

shield

Safety Gate Hold

Keeps a machine safety gate retracted and firmly locked open during processing, requiring an intentional air signal to close.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80mm bore when a 63mm cylinder lacks thrust, stepping up from the 63mm bore's 2182N at 0.7MPa to the 80mm bore's 3518N for heavier holding. Select the SAILB configuration specifically because the load must be secured at the retracted rod-in position. If your application requires the load to be clamped and held at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, you should select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally lift the lock and drop the load. If human safety depends on the load remaining suspended, add an independent mechanical safety measure as well. When replacing this unit, match the 80mm bore, 80mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, and mounting style. Note that adding a magnet (-S) is required if you intend to track position with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80 FAQ

The 80mm bore provides a push force of 3518N at 0.7MPa and 4523N at 0.9MPa. The pull force at 0.5MPa is 2268N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end. It engages after the cylinder stops and is released by supplying air to the release port or using the manual lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke.
