Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 80mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80S

The AirTAC SAILB80X80-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it securely holds the rod-in position without requiring continuous live air pressure. Delivering 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force at 0.5MPa, it provides robust load management for demanding pneumatic setups.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for use with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors, enabling precise end-of-stroke detection. The variable air cushion decelerates the moving load prior to engagement, with the locker-end cushion measuring 22.5mm compared to 36mm on the free end. The standard carbon steel rod and PT tapered port threads ensure durable, leak-free integration into existing systems.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops by engaging the mechanical lock at the stroke end.

shield

Safety Gate Interlock

Holds safety gates or guards closed in the rod-in position without consuming compressed air, releasing only when control air is actively supplied.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains a retracted clamping state on machined parts during machine pauses, ensuring the workpiece stays secured without relying on pneumatic pressure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80mm bore when a 63mm cylinder (1402N pull at 0.5MPa) lacks the strength to hold your load, but a 100mm bore (3681N pull) would be excessive. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position; if your application requires holding at the extended rod-out position, the SAILF variant is the correct choice. For applications needing the rod clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder should be used instead.

The integrated lock provides a static hold that engages only after the cylinder has stopped, meaning it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. To maintain lock integrity, avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the mechanism; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. Direct replacements must match the 80mm bore, 80mm stroke, back locker position, PT port, and -S magnet specification.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X80S FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, the 80mm bore provides 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 3518N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging automatically to hold the rod at the retracted stroke end when air pressure is cut off. It is a static hold, not a dynamic brake, and unlocks via automatic air supply or a manual release lever.
