About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X150S

The AirTAC BSAID100X150-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod extending from both ends and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It grips the piston rod to hold loads securely at any position along the 150 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 5500 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 3681 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation guidance.

It is vital to distinguish this 5500 N holding force from the 3681 N thrust; the clamp sustains a static load, whereas thrust drives the motion. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston, while the clamp is the true holding mechanism. Unlocking requires a third G1/8 enclasp port and balanced pressure on both sides, as the clamp engages only after the rod has completely stopped and cannot brake a moving load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X150S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Maintains vertical payloads at any height along the stroke with 5500 N of holding force, preventing gravity-driven falls when air pressure is removed.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the double rod at an exact intermediate point for secure clamping, machining, or inspection processes without relying on end-stroke cushions.

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied clamp immediately grips the rod during a sudden air loss, locking the load in place mid-travel until pressure is restored.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X150S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore if your application requires substantial equal bidirectional thrust (3681 N at 0.5 MPa) alongside robust mid-stroke holding. If your load is lighter, stepping down to the 80 mm bore offers 2268 N pull thrust and a 3600 N hold; if you need more holding power, the 125 mm bore provides 5734 N thrust and an 8600 N hold. The BSAID100X150-S is specified over a plain SAID when unpowered load retention is mandatory, and it beats a SAIL end-lock cylinder because it clamps at any point, not just at stroke extremes.

For safe operation, remember the lock engages only after the cylinder stops, so human-safety applications need an independent backup measure. To release the clamp safely, balance the air pressure to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. This carbon steel rod unit uses PT tapered ports (1/2 inch cylinder, G1/8 enclasp) and includes a -S magnet for CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. The double-rod design omits the FB, CA, CB, and CR mounts, accepting Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X150S FAQ

The built-in clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It is bidirectional, meaning it securely holds the double rod in place regardless of whether the cylinder was extending or retracting before it stopped.

The lock only engages after the rod has stopped and cannot brake a moving load. To release it safely, you must apply air to the G1/8 enclasp port while ensuring the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced; otherwise, the rod may jump abruptly.
