Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X160

The AirTAC Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X160 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 cylinder with a Ø100mm bore, 160mm stroke and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock that holds the rod at ANY position along its travel — with a static holding force of 5500 N.

About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X160

The AirTAC BSAID100X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It delivers an equal thrust of 3681 N in both extension and retraction directions at 0.5 MPa. A defining trait of this enclasp unit is its ability to lock the rod at any position along its 160 mm stroke, providing a robust static holding force of 5500 N. Buyers must distinguish holding force from cylinder thrust: the 5500 N clamp rating dictates static load capacity during a hold, whereas the 3681 N figure represents the pneumatic driving force.

Because the rod extends from both ends, operators can mount a workpiece on one side and attach a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side guidance. The clamping mechanism relies on a separate G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release the spring grip. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke end; the mechanical clamp is the true load-holding device. Without a magnet specified, this base unit does not support CMSE or DMSE position sensing.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X160 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Maintains a 5500 N static hold on a vertical lifting axis at any point in the 160 mm travel, preventing gravity-driven drops during a power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Clamps the dual rods securely mid-stroke to freeze a workpiece or tooling platform rigidly for precision machining or inspection tasks.

factory

Dual-Side Tooling Actuation

Utilizes the double-rod layout to drive a primary workpiece on one end while simultaneously moving a counterweight or guide on the opposite end.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X160 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod enclasp model when a process demands equal force both ways and mid-stroke holding, such as lifting and lowering a vertical load. If your application only requires locking at the stroke extremes, the SAIL series is a simpler choice, while a plain SAID lacks a clamp entirely. If you need greater holding security, stepping up to the 125 mm bore provides an 8600 N clamp force and 5734 N pull thrust. Conversely, dropping to the 80 mm bore reduces the hold to 3600 N and pull thrust to 2268 N.

This BSAID100X160 variant uses PT tapered ports, a 1/2 cylinder port, and an M20x1.5 rod thread that handles high side loads. It supports Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mountings (omitting FB, CA, CB, CR). Operationally, the clamp engages only after the rod stops moving—it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, you must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, or the rod may jump abruptly. For safety-critical human applications, always add an independent external safety measure.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X160 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It engages via a spring mechanism to hold the double rod at any position along the 160 mm stroke, entirely separate from the 3681 N pneumatic thrust.

The clamp locks only after the rod has completely stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. To release it safely, you must apply air to the G1/8 enclasp port and ensure the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly upon release.
