About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50

The AirTAC BSAID100X50 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the piston rod to hold the load securely at any position along its 50 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 5500 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions, generating 3681 N of push and pull force at 0.5 MPa. It is crucial to distinguish this 5500 N holding force from the cylinder's 3681 N thrust—the clamp size must match the static load weight, not the pneumatic drive force.

This model features a 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 rod thread on both ends, providing robust resistance against side loads. The clamp mechanism requires a third G1/8 enclasp port (separate from the 1/2 cylinder ports) to release the rod at 0.15-0.7 MPa. The variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near the stroke ends; they do not hold the load. Furthermore, the double-rod configuration allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50 Is Used

precision_manufacturing

Machining Fixtures

Holds a workpiece stationary at any point in the 50 mm travel during drilling or milling, using the 5500 N clamp to resist cutting forces without live air pressure.

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Prevents a 3681 N dual-sided load from dropping when air pressure drops, locking the rod instantly once the cylinder stops moving.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Secures the equal-force double-rod mechanism mid-stroke during a power loss, though an independent safety measure is required for human safety.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this BSAID100X50 when an application demands equal force in both directions plus mid-stroke holding, such as a machining fixture requiring a second guide rod. If you do not need a rod extending from both ends, the single-rod BSAI100X50 offers the same 5500 N holding force but with standard push/pull thrust asymmetry. For lighter vertical loads, stepping down to a 80 mm bore reduces the holding force to 3600 N and pull thrust to 2268 N at 0.5 MPa.

Remember that the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. The lock must be released with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston, or the rod may jump abruptly. For safety-critical human-interaction loads, install an independent external safety measure. This cylinder uses PT ports, accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB, CA, CB, CR), and operates at 30-500 mm/s. No magnet is specified for this configuration, so CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors cannot be used without modification.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50 FAQ

The 5500 N static holding force is the mechanical clamp's capacity to hold a stopped load at any position, which is separate from the 3681 N pneumatic thrust the cylinder generates at 0.5 MPa to move the load.

The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped moving and cannot brake a moving load. To unlock it safely, you must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port; otherwise, the rod may jump abruptly.
