About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50S

The AirTAC BSAID100X50-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers a bidirectional holding force of 5500 N at any position along its 50 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 3681 N (0.5 MPa). Remember that this static holding force is a distinct quantity from the cylinder thrust; you must size the clamp's 5500 N capacity against your static load, not the pneumatic thrust.

A core benefit of the double-rod design is enabling dual-side workpiece mounting, allowing you to attach a main tool on one end and a counterweight, position flag, or anti-rotation guide on the opposite end. The clamping mechanism uses a third G1/8 enclasp port (separate from the 1/2 cylinder ports) and requires 0.15-0.7 MPa to unlock. Note that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is what actually secures the load. This unit includes a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Holds a 5500 N vertical load at any mid-stroke position during power loss, preventing sudden drops on lifting fixtures.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Secures a dual-sided workpiece or fixture rigidly in place during machining or inspection, using the second rod for a guide.

shield

Emergency Safety Stop

Provides a bidirectional static hold after the cylinder motion stops, acting as a fail-safe clamp during e-stop events.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when an application requires substantial equal-force bi-directional movement and multi-point holding. If your load is lighter, stepping down to the 80 mm bore offers 2268 N thrust and a 3600 N holding force. Conversely, the 125 mm bore provides 5734 N thrust and 8600 N holding force for heavier dies. Select the BSAID clamp-lock over a plain SAID when power loss must not result in the load dropping, and over a SAIL model when you need to hold at any intermediate stroke position rather than just at the end.

As a replacement, verify the 100 mm bore, 50 mm stroke, double-rod configuration, PT port threads, and the -S magnet option. The mounting set for double-rod cylinders omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Always ensure the rod has fully stopped before applying the clamp, as it cannot brake a moving load. Unlocking must be done with balanced air pressures on both sides to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, and human-safety-critical applications require an independent secondary safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X50S FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp is spring-applied and air-released via a third G1/8 port. To prevent the rod from jumping, you must unlock it only when the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced and the cylinder has stopped.
