The AirTAC BSAID100X900-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 900 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 5500 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, its thrust is identical in both directions at 3681 N (at 0.5 MPa), making it ideal for dual-side guidance. A rod out both ends allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a counterweight or position flag on the other.

It is crucial to distinguish holding force from thrust: the 5500 N clamp grip is a separate static metric from the 3681 N pneumatic thrust. The clamp uses a third G1/8 enclasp port and requires a 0.15-0.7 MPa operating range. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the clamp is the true holding device. The -S magnet works with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors.

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X900S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when an application requires holding a heavy load mid-stroke, as the 5500 N clamp vastly exceeds the 1400 N grip of a 50 mm bore. If locking is only needed at the stroke end, a plain SAIL saves space. For non-safety-critical positioning without power, BSAI works well, but note the clamp locks only after the rod stops and cannot brake moving loads. Always unlock with balanced piston pressures to prevent the rod from jumping.

This BSAID100X900-S features a 900 mm stroke (within the 1000 mm standard limit) and a 25 mm rod with an M20x1.5 thread. At this length, the unsupported rod needs an external guide to manage side loads. It uses PT tapered ports (1/2 inch cylinder, G1/8 enclasp) and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mountings (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). The -S option supports CMSE/DMSE sensors.
