About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X80

The AirTAC BSAID125X80 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 80 mm travel with a static holding force of 8600 N. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N at 0.5 MPa, making it ideal for symmetrical push-pull tasks. A key distinction here is that this 8600 N holding force is a separate metric from the cylinder thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load weight, not the pneumatic push force.

A primary reason to choose this double-rod layout is to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end, providing dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The clamp mechanism relies on a third G1/8 enclasp port to release the rod, requiring a balanced air pressure between 0.15-0.7 MPa on both piston sides to unlock safely. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it is the mechanical clamp that actually holds the load, not the cushion.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X80 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures heavy elevated platforms at any mid-stroke height with 8600 N of holding force, preventing gravity-driven drops during a sudden air loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for machining or inspection, using the second rod end for an anti-rotation guide.

Emergency Safety Stop

Provides a bidirectional clamping brake that engages once motion halts, maintaining load position safely during power or pressure failures.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X80 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this 125 mm bore when an application demands heavy bidirectional force (5734 N both ways) and failsafe mid-stroke holding. If you need less force, stepping down to a 100 mm bore yields 3681 N thrust and a 5500 N holding force. Choose this BSAID model over a stroke-end-only SAIL lock when you must secure the rod at variable heights. If power-loss holding is not required at all, a plain SAID double-rod cylinder suffices. Remember the clamp locks only after the rod has completely stopped; it cannot brake a moving load, and safety-critical applications require an independent external measure.

For replacements, match the double-rod layout, 125 mm bore, 80 mm stroke, and PT tapered port threads. The mounting set for BSAID omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. The 32 mm diameter carbon steel rod and M27x2 thread provide high side-load capacity, though external guidance is recommended for heavy loads. Without a -S magnet, this unit does not support CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X80 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 8600 N. It locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving; it is not a dynamic brake.

The clamp is released via a third G1/8 enclasp port, but only when air pressure is balanced on both sides of the piston. If pressures are unbalanced during unlock, the rod can jump abruptly, so ensure the load is stopped and stable before releasing.
