About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X1000

The AirTAC BSAID40X1000 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a built-in clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released enclasp gripper secures the piston rod at any position along its 1000mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 900 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 528 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod end is ideal for mounting a counterweight, a position flag, or dual-side guidance to prevent rotation.

It is vital to distinguish this 900 N holding force from the cylinder's 528 N thrust—the clamp secures the static load, while thrust drives the motion. Furthermore, the variable air cushion merely decelerates the piston near stroke ends; it does not hold the load. The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to unlock. Note that the clamp locks only after the rod stops and cannot brake a moving load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X1000 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures a 1000mm vertical lift at any intermediate height using the 900 N clamp, preventing a dropped load during a sudden air loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds an inspection part steady via the second rod end while the primary end actuates a tool, ensuring zero drift during the process.

shield

Fail-Safe Clamping

Engages the spring-applied gripper to freeze a moving assembly instantly upon power loss, provided the rod has already stopped.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X1000 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this BSAID40X1000 for long-travel, dual-rod applications needing mid-stroke holding without live pressure. If your load exceeds 900 N, step up to the 50mm bore, which offers a 1400 N holding force and 825 N pull thrust. If you only need to hold at the stroke ends, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices, but BSAI/BSAID is required for locking anywhere. For shorter travel under 800mm, the BSAI40X800 single-rod version is standard; this 1000mm stroke is non-standard and, given its length, requires an external guide to support the rod and prevent excessive side-loading.

Replacement requires matching the double-rod configuration, 40mm bore, 1000mm stroke, and PT port threads (1/4 cylinder port, G1/8 enclasp port). The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. As specified, this unit has no magnet (-S) and therefore cannot use CMSE or DMSE sensors. Remember: unlock only with balanced piston pressures to prevent the rod from jumping, and add an independent safety measure for human-safety-critical holds.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X1000 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 900 N. It engages via a spring-applied mechanism at any position along the 1000mm stroke, holding the load bidirectionally without requiring continuous air pressure.

The clamp must be released by applying 0.15-0.7 MPa to the G1/8 enclasp port only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If unlocked with unbalanced pressures, the rod can jump abruptly. It locks only after the rod stops and cannot brake a moving load.
