About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160

The AirTAC BSAID40X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers an equal 528 N of thrust in both extension and retraction directions at 0.5 MPa. A rod extending from each end allows you to mount a workpiece on one side while attaching a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The enclasp mechanism provides a static holding force of 900 N, gripping the rod securely at any point along the 160 mm travel.

It is crucial to distinguish this 900 N holding force from the 528 N thrust; the clamp sustains a stationary load, whereas thrust dictates movement. The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port, separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports, and unlocks only when air pressure is balanced between 0.15-0.7 MPa. Remember that the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; the clamp itself is what truly holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Prevents a raised workpiece from dropping by clamping the rod at any intermediate height during vertical transfer operations.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Engages the 900 N spring-applied gripper instantly upon air loss to freeze the dual rods mid-stroke, protecting the process.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a part rigidly at a custom stroke position for intermediate drilling or inspection, using the second rod for a guide flag.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this double-rod model when an application requires equal force both ways and mid-stroke holding, stepping up from a 32 mm bore (345 N thrust, 600 N hold) if your load exceeds 900 N of static weight. Choose BSAID over a stroke-end-only SAIL lock when you must freeze the rod anywhere in its travel, or use a plain SAID if no clamping is required. The 16 mm carbon steel rod with an M12x1.25 thread handles side loads well, but for this 160 mm stroke, external guidance is still recommended for heavy loads.

For replacements, confirm the double-rod configuration, 40 mm bore, 160 mm stroke, and PT threaded 1/4 cylinder ports plus the G1/8 unlock port. Mounting options omit FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, supporting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Since no magnet is specified, position sensing requires adding a -S option to use CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. Note that the clamp locks only after the rod stops moving—it cannot brake a moving load—and requires balanced pressure to unlock safely without abrupt rod jumping.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160 FAQ

The integrated enclasp clamp provides a static holding force of 900 N. This gripping force is separate from the 528 N pneumatic thrust and secures the double rod at any position along the 160 mm stroke once the piston has stopped moving.

The clamp is spring-applied and air-released via a third G1/8 port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, it must only be unlocked after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced and the cylinder has completely stopped.
