About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160S

The AirTAC BSAID40X160-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. Because it is a double-rod variant, it delivers equal thrust in both directions, generating 528 N of push and pull force at 0.5 MPa. The integrated enclasp mechanism provides a documented static holding force of 900 N, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 160 mm travel. It is crucial to distinguish this holding force from the cylinder's thrust: the 900 N clamp rating dictates how much static load the brake can sustain, whereas the 528 N thrust governs how much work the piston can move.

A double-rod design is specifically chosen when an application requires dual-side functionality, such as mounting a workpiece on one rod end and a counterweight, position flag, or external guide on the opposite end to prevent rotation. The clamp operates via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, which is separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports. Remember that the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near the stroke ends; they do not hold the load. The clamp itself locks only after the rod has completely stopped, and it must be released with balanced air pressures to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon unlock.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Load Holding

Freezes a vertically transferred workpiece at any point in the 160 mm travel, using the 900 N clamp to prevent gravity-induced drops during an air or power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Freeze

Secures a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for a secondary drilling or inspection process, using the second rod end for an anti-rotation guide.

shield

Emergency Mid-Stroke Stop

Halts and holds an actuated assembly safely in the middle of its cycle when an emergency stop is triggered, provided the rod was already stationary before the clamp engaged.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select the BSAID40X160-S when you need a true multi-position hold on a double-rod axis and 528 N of equal-direction thrust is sufficient. If your load requires more clamping strength, stepping up to the 50 mm bore provides a 1400 N holding force and 825 N of thrust at 0.5 MPa. Conversely, lighter duties can use the 32 mm bore, which offers 600 N of holding force and 345 N of thrust. This model is preferred over a SAIL cylinder when the load must be frozen mid-stroke rather than only at the stroke ends. If no locking is needed at all, a plain SAID cylinder suffices.

As a drop-in replacement, verify the double-rod layout, 40 mm bore, 160 mm stroke, and PT tapered port threads. The operating pressure is 0.15-0.7 MPa. The -S magnet supports AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors. Mounting is limited to Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 (the double-rod design omits FB, CA, CB, and CR). The 16 mm carbon steel rod with an M12x1.25 thread handles side loads well, though external guidance is still recommended for unsupported lengths. Always ensure the rod has stopped before applying the clamp, and add an independent safety measure for human-life-critical holds.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X160S FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 900 N. This gripping force is entirely separate from the 528 N of pneumatic thrust the cylinder generates, meaning you must size the holding force against your static load weight, not the cylinder's push or pull power.

The clamp is spring-applied and air-released via a dedicated G1/8 port. It only locks after the rod has stopped moving and cannot brake a moving piston. To safely unlock it, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced; otherwise, the rod can jump abruptly when released.
