About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450

The AirTAC BSAID50X450 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers a bidirectional holding force of 1400 N at any position along its 450 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), allowing you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. Remember that this 1400 N static holding capacity is a separate metric from the 825 N thrust; you must size the clamp force against the static load, not the cylinder's push strength.

The enclasp mechanism operates via a dedicated G1/8 unlock port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. It is critical to distinguish the clamp from the variable air cushion—the cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends, while the mechanical clamp actually secures the load. Furthermore, the lock engages only after the piston has completely stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. For safe operation, pressure must be balanced on both sides before unlocking to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Load Holding

Secures a 1400 N vertical load at any intermediate position during a power loss, preventing gravity-driven drops without relying on stroke-end stops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-sided workpiece rigidly in place for machining or inspection, using the second rod end for an anti-rotation guide.

lock

Mid-Stroke Emergency Stop

Freezes the 450 mm travel instantly upon an emergency stop signal, locking the load exactly where the piston halted.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod configuration when your application demands equal force both ways and dual-side mounting, such as attaching a position flag or secondary tool to the opposite rod end. If you do not need a second rod, the single-rod BSAI50X450 offers the same 1400 N hold with a higher 982 N push force at 0.5 MPa. Stepping up to a 63 mm bore increases the holding force to 2200 N and thrust to 1402 N, while dropping to a 40 mm bore reduces the hold to 900 N and thrust to 528 N. BSAI beats SAIL here because it locks at any position, whereas SAIL only holds at stroke ends.

As a replacement match, verify the 50 mm bore, 450 mm stroke, double-rod design, and PT port threads. The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR options, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Because the 450 mm stroke is long, an external guide is recommended to support side loads. Note that the clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and requires balanced pressure to unlock safely; human-safety-critical loads need an additional independent safety measure. Without a -S magnet, CMSE or DMSE sensors cannot be used.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450 FAQ

It provides a 1400 N static holding force that locks the rod at any position in either direction. The spring-applied clamp engages only after the cylinder has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod.

You must apply 0.15-0.7 MPa air to the G1/8 enclasp port and ensure the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release.
