About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450S

The AirTAC BSAID50X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It provides a documented static holding force of 1400 N and locks the piston rod at any position along its 450 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is identical in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and having a rod extending from each end allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation.

It is crucial to distinguish between this 1400 N static holding force and the cylinder's 825 N thrust—the clamp secures the static load, while thrust moves it. The clamp engages only after the rod has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; the clamp is what actually holds the load. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure on both piston sides via the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, preventing abrupt rod jumps upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Locks a suspended workpiece at any point along a 450 mm vertical axis, preventing gravity-driven drops when air pressure is removed.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Secures a dual-sided fixture rigidly during drilling or milling, using the 1400 N clamp force to resist cutting vibrations.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Holds the load safely in place during a sudden power loss, though an independent safety measure is required for human safety.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod BSAID50X450-S when you need to hold a load at any intermediate stroke position, rather than just at the end of travel like a SAIL cylinder. If your application does not require mid-stroke holding, a plain SAID cylinder suffices. If you need higher holding capacity, stepping up to a 63 mm bore increases the clamp force to 2200 N and the pull thrust to 1402 N. Conversely, a 40 mm bore offers 900 N of holding force and 528 N of thrust.

This 50 mm bore model features a 20 mm rod with an M16x1.5 thread, providing good side-load resistance, but at 450 mm of stroke an external guide is highly recommended to prevent binding. The operating pressure is 0.15-0.7 MPa, and speed ranges from 30-800 mm/s. It accepts PT tapered ports and a specific mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2) since the double-rod design omits FB, CA, CB, and CR. The -S magnet works with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. Remember that the clamp locks only after stopping and requires balanced pressure to unlock safely; for human-safety-critical loads, an independent mechanical measure is required.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X450S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It is bidirectional and locks the rod at any position, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving and cannot brake a moving rod.

The clamp is released by supplying air to the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, but only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release.
