About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X600

The AirTAC BSAID50X600 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-ended carbon steel rod and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N, gripping the rod to hold the load securely at any position along its 600 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and the extending rod out the rear allows you to mount a counterweight, position flag, or secondary guidance tool on the opposite end.

It is crucial to distinguish between this 1400 N holding force and the cylinder's 825 N thrust—the clamp bears the static load, not the pneumatic pressure. The lock engages only after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at the ends merely decelerates the piston near stroke completion; the clamp is the sole device holding the load. Unlocking requires a separate G1/8 enclasp port and balanced air pressure on both piston sides to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X600 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Maintains a 1400 N vertical load at any height during power loss, using the double-rod rear end for a counterweight.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Secures a workpiece at a specific mid-stroke coordinate for machining, preventing drift without relying on air cushions.

build

Dual-Side Assembly Station

Operates a tool on the front rod while using the rear rod for anti-rotation guidance and emergency mid-travel clamping.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X600 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 50 mm bore when an application demands 825 N of thrust both ways alongside a 1400 N clamp hold over a 600 mm span. If your load requires less force, the 40 mm bore offers 528 N thrust and a 900 N hold; if you need more holding power, the 63 mm bore provides 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N hold. This BSAID model excels over a SAIL cylinder when you must lock mid-stroke rather than only at the ends, and it outperforms a plain SAID by maintaining position without live air pressure. For safety-critical stops, remember the clamp locks only after the rod stops and requires an independent safety measure for human safety.

This cylinder uses PT tapered port threads, a 1/4 cylinder port, and the G1/8 enclasp port. Being a double-rod variant, it omits the FB, CA, CB, and CR foot and clevis mounts, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets. At 600 mm, the stroke is long, so the 20 mm carbon steel rod and M16x1.5 thread provide good side-load resistance, but an external guide is still recommended to prevent binding. Sensors are not included, but adding an -S magnet enables CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches in the dual sensor grooves.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X600 FAQ

The spring-applied clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It locks the carbon steel rod bidirectionally at any position along the 600 mm stroke, but only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The lock is released by applying air to the G1/8 enclasp port, but only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release, so an external safety measure is required for human safety.
