About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X700S

The AirTAC BSAID50X700-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N, gripping the rod to hold the load securely at any position along its 700 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the other. Note that this 1400 N holding force is distinct from the 825 N thrust; you must size the clamp against the static load, not the cylinder's motive power.

The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port, separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports, and requires balanced air pressure to unlock safely. The variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; they do not hold the load. Equipped with a magnet (-S), it supports AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors for position feedback. Operating pressure is 0.15-0.7 MPa, and the carbon steel rods with M16x1.5 threads handle side loads well, though a 700 mm stroke still needs external guidance.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X700S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Locks a lifted load at any height along the 700 mm travel with 1400 N of holding force, preventing drops during power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Dual-Tool Machining

Uses the double-rod design to mount a workpiece on one end and a secondary tool or position flag on the opposite end.

shield

Inspection Position Hold

Clamps the rod securely mid-stroke to freeze the part in place for machining or inspection without maintaining live air pressure.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X700S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when you need equal push/pull force (825 N at 0.5 MPa) and dual-side mounting for tools or anti-rotation guides. If your application only requires locking at the stroke end, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices, but the BSAID50X700-S is necessary for holding at any intermediate position. If you need more holding power, stepping up to the 63 mm bore provides 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N clamp force. Remember the clamp locks only after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. Safety-critical applications require an independent external measure.

This replacement unit matches a 50 mm bore, 700 mm stroke, double-rod layout with PT tapered ports. It accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). The -S magnet works directly with AirTAC CMSE and DMSE switches. For a 700 mm stroke, always use an external guide to prevent excessive side loading on the rod seals.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X700S FAQ

The 1400 N static holding force is the clamp's grip on the rod, which is separate from the 825 N pneumatic thrust. The clamp holds the load at any position without live pressure, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving.

You must apply balanced air pressure to both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port before unlocking. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can jump abruptly. The clamp is not a braking device for a moving rod.
