About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X75

The AirTAC BSAID50X75 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod extending from both ends and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 75 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 1400 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa). Remember that the holding force is a separate metric from thrust; you must size the clamp's 1400 N capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's propulsion force.

A second rod is often chosen to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the other, providing dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The clamp mechanism uses a third G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced air pressure to unlock safely. Note that the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. The clamp locks strictly after the rod stops, so it cannot brake a moving rod.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X75 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Secures a vertically lifted load at any intermediate position to prevent gravity-driven drops during an air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for machining or inspection, utilizing the second rod for a position flag.

shield

Emergency Stop Hold

Maintains the rod's position safely when power is removed, provided the cylinder has already stopped moving.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X75 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this double-rod model when you need equal force both ways and intermediate holding along the stroke. If your application only requires holding at the stroke extremes, a plain SAI or SAIL cylinder is simpler. If you need more holding capacity, stepping up to bore 63 provides 2200 N of holding force and 1402 N of pull thrust, but adds physical size. The 20 mm rod and M16x1.5 thread offer good side-load resistance for the 75 mm stroke, though external guides are always recommended for lateral loads.

To replace this unit, match the double-rod configuration, 50 mm bore, 75 mm stroke, and PT port threads. Mounting options for the double-rod BSAID omit the FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, offering Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. A magnet (-S) is not specified here, so CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors cannot be used without modification. For safety-critical holds, an additional independent measure is required, as the clamp unlocks only when pressures are balanced.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X75 FAQ

It provides a static holding force of 1400 N and can lock at any position along the stroke. The clamp is bidirectional and holds the load whether the rod was extending or retracting.

The spring-applied clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port, or the rod may jump abruptly.
