About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X400

The AirTAC BSAID63X400 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod extending from both ends and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the piston rod to secure the load at any position along the 400mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 2200 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 1402 N (0.5 MPa), while the clamp operates bidirectionally whether the rod was extending or retracting.

It is vital to distinguish holding force from cylinder thrust: the 2200 N clamp rating is the static load capacity of the brake, entirely separate from the 1402 N pneumatic driving force. The variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. The clamp requires a third G1/8 enclasp port to release, needing 0.15-0.7 MPa of balanced air pressure to unlock safely. The double-rod layout lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the other, providing dual-side anti-rotation guidance.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

2200 N
static holding force (Ø63 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø63mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa1559 N1402 N
0.7 MPa (max)2182 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (2200 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X400 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Z-Axis Hold

Holds a 63mm double-rod vertical axis securely at any mid-stroke elevation during power loss, preventing gravity-driven drops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Locks the extended tool mount rigidly in place for a machining or inspection process, ensuring no pneumatic pressure drift.

build

Dual-Side Fixture Guidance

Uses the opposing rod end for a position flag while the clamp secures the primary workpiece carrier along the 400mm travel.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X400 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 63mm bore when a project needs 1402 N of equal push/pull force alongside a robust 2200 N static hold anywhere in the travel. If your application only requires locking at the stroke extremes, the SAIL end-lock cylinder suffices; if no holding is needed, a plain SAID double-rod cylinder is lighter. For higher load demands, stepping up to the 80mm bore yields 2268 N of thrust and a 3600 N clamp capacity. The 20mm rod and M16x1.5 thread handle side loads well, but at 400mm stroke, an external guide rail is recommended to prevent binding.

As a direct replacement, match the double-rod format, 63mm bore, 400mm stroke, and PT 3/8 cylinder ports. The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Since no magnet is specified, position sensing requires adding a -S option for CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state switches. Remember: the clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and cannot brake a moving rod; safety-critical loads need an independent mechanical stop.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X400 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 2200 N. It locks the rod at any position along the 400mm stroke, but only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp is spring-applied and air-released via a third G1/8 port. You must apply 0.15-0.7 MPa of air pressure and ensure the piston pressures are balanced before unlocking, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly.
