About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X100

The AirTAC BSAID80X100 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers an equal thrust of 2268 N in both directions, while the bidirectional enclasp mechanism locks the rod at any position along the 100 mm travel. It provides a robust static holding force of 3600 N. Remember that this holding force is a distinct quantity from the cylinder thrust; you must size the clamp holding capacity against the static load, not the 2268 N thrust value.

A rod extending from both ends allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The lock engages only after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. To release the clamp safely, air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced via the separate G1/8 enclasp port, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly. The variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X100 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Maintains a 3600 N static hold on a vertical axis at any intermediate height, preventing gravity-driven drops when air pressure is removed.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Spring-applied clamp engages instantly upon air loss to freeze the double-rod position, securing the load until balanced pressure is restored.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Locks the workpiece rigidly in place for secondary machining or inspection, using the opposing rod end for a position flag or secondary tool.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X100 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80 mm bore model when an application requires 2268 N of equal bidirectional thrust alongside a 3600 N static holding capacity. If your load is lighter, the 63 mm bore offers 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N hold; for heavier suspended loads, stepping up to the 100 mm bore provides 3681 N thrust and a 5500 N hold. This BSAID variant is preferred over a plain SAID when power-failure holding at any intermediate position is mandatory. If locking is only needed at the stroke ends, a SAIL cylinder suffices.

Because the clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and cannot act as a dynamic brake, safety-critical suspended loads require an additional independent safety measure. The 25 mm carbon steel rod with an M20x1.5 thread handles high side loads, but any stroke over 300 mm still needs an external guide. Replacement matching requires a double-rod, 80 mm bore, 100 mm stroke, PT ported cylinder with the correct BSAID mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2), omitting the FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets. Without a -S magnet, it cannot use CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X100 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It is a bidirectional, spring-applied, air-released mechanism that locks the rod at any position along the stroke, completely separate from the 2268 N thrust the cylinder generates.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped and cannot brake a moving rod. To release it safely, you must apply air to the G1/8 enclasp port while ensuring the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced; otherwise, the rod can move abruptly upon unlocking.
