About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X175

The AirTAC BSAID80X175 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and a built-in clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper secures the piston rod at any position along its 175mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is identical in both directions, providing 2268 N of pull at 0.5 MPa on either side. Remember that the holding force is a separate quantity from the cylinder thrust; you must size the 3600 N clamp against your static load, not the 2268 N thrust.

The dual-rod architecture lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. This cylinder uses a 25 mm rod with an M20x1.5 thread, which handles side loads well, but external guidance is still recommended for rigid structures. The clamp relies on a third G1/8 enclasp port to release the rod, requiring balanced air pressure between 0.15-0.7 MPa to prevent abrupt movement upon unlocking. Note that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is what actually holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X175 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Prevents gravity-driven drops on vertical lifts by clamping the 25mm rod securely at any point in the 175mm stroke.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Spring-applied enclasp engages automatically during an air pressure failure, freezing the load mid-travel with 3600 N of force.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-side workpiece rigidly for machining or inspection, using the second rod for a position flag or counterweight.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X175 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80mm bore when you need robust mid-stroke holding that a standard SAI or SAID cannot provide, and when a stroke-end-only lock like the SAIL is insufficient. If your application requires less force, the 63mm bore offers 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N holding force; if you need more, the 100mm bore provides 3681 N thrust and 5500 N holding force. The BSAID80X175 operates at 30-800 mm/s and uses PT-threaded ports (3/8 cylinder port, G1/8 enclasp port). Mounting options for this double-rod version include Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2, omitting the FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets used on single-rod BSAI models. As this model lacks a magnet (-S not specified), it will not work with CMSE or DMSE sensors without modification.

For safe operation, understand that the clamp locks only after the rod has completely stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. You must unlock the clamp only when cylinder pressures are balanced, or the rod may jump unexpectedly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X175 FAQ

The clamp provides a static holding force of 3600 N, which is separate from the cylinder's 2268 N thrust (equal both ways at 0.5 MPa). You must size the 3600 N clamp against your static load, not the thrust.

No. The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures to prevent the rod from jumping, and safety-critical loads require an independent safety measure.
