About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X225

The AirTAC BSAID80X225 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 225 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (0.5 MPa), and the twin 25 mm carbon steel rods extending from both ends allow you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite side for dual-side guidance. It is crucial to distinguish this 3600 N holding force from the 2268 N thrust; the clamp secures the static load, while thrust drives the motion.

This enclasp mechanism operates via a dedicated G1/8 third port, separate from the 3/8 cylinder ports, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release the lock. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near the stroke ends; it does not hold the load. The clamp locks strictly after the cylinder stops and cannot brake a moving rod. Furthermore, unlocking requires balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston, or the rod may jump abruptly, meaning safety-critical applications need an independent external measure.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X225 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Holds a lifted vertical payload at any point in the 225 mm travel without relying on continuous air pressure.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Spring-applied clamp immediately secures the 25 mm rods if air supply drops, preventing uncommanded falls.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Uses the second rod for a counterweight while the primary rod locks the workpiece rigidly for inspection.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X225 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80 mm bore model when an application demands mid-stroke holding and dual-side rod mounting. If you need less force, the 63 mm bore offers 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N holding force, while stepping up to the 100 mm bore provides 3681 N thrust and a 5500 N hold. Select the BSAID80X225 over a stroke-end-only SAIL cylinder when you must secure the load anywhere in the travel, not just at the limits. If locking is entirely unnecessary, a plain SAID double-rod cylinder suffices. For stroke lengths at or above 300 mm, adding an external guide is recommended to manage side loads.

For a direct replacement, verify the double-rod configuration, 80 mm bore, 225 mm stroke, and PT tapered ports. The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets. As specified, this unit has no magnet (-S not specified); if position sensing is required, select an -S variant to use CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X225 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It is bidirectional, meaning it securely holds the 25 mm rods whether the cylinder was extending or retracting, and it can lock at any position along the stroke.

The clamp unlocks only when the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced and the cylinder has stopped. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release. The clamp locks only after the rod stops and cannot serve as a moving-rod brake.
