About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X300

The AirTAC BSAID80X300 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 3600 N, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 300 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is identical in both directions, delivering 2268 N of push and pull force at 0.5 MPa. A vital distinction to remember is that this 3600 N holding force is separate from the cylinder's thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load weight, not the pneumatic push force.

The dual-rod architecture serves a distinct mechanical purpose beyond equal force: it allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end, providing dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The clamp mechanism uses a third G1/8 enclasp port—separate from the two 3/8 cylinder ports—and requires 0.15-0.7 MPa to unlock. Remember that the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke end; the clamp is the true load holder.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X300 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Drop Prevention

Secures a 300 mm vertical lift at any mid-stroke position, preventing gravity drops during a sudden air loss while balancing loads on both rod ends.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Locks the part rigidly in place for drilling or inspection with 3600 N of clamp force, using the second rod end for an external position flag.

shield

Power Failure Safety Stop

Engages instantly upon air loss to freeze the double-rod mechanism wherever it stopped, acting as an emergency hold until pressure is restored.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X300 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this double-rod model when your mechanism requires equal push/pull thrust and anti-rotation guidance over a 300 mm stroke. If you need less holding capacity, the 63 mm bore offers 1402 N pull thrust at 0.5 MPa and a 2200 N clamp hold. If your load is heavier, stepping up to a 100 mm bore provides 3681 N pull thrust and a 5500 N hold. Choose this BSAID clamp-lock over a plain SAID when unpowered mid-stroke holding is mandatory, and over a SAIL model when you need to lock anywhere instead of only at stroke ends.

For safe operation, note that the clamp locks only after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both piston sides, or the rod may jump abruptly. At 300 mm of travel, the long unsupported rod requires an external guide to prevent side-load wear. This unit uses PT port threads, a 25 mm carbon steel rod with an M20x1.5 thread, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). Sensors require a magnet (-S) to work with CMSE reed or DMSE electronic switches.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X300 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It grips the 25 mm rod at any position along the 300 mm stroke, holding the load bidirectionally without requiring live air pressure.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. To unlock it safely, you must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before applying air to the G1/8 enclasp port, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly.
