The AirTAC Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X400 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 400mm stroke and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock that holds the rod at ANY position along its travel — with a static holding force of 3600 N.
The AirTAC BSAID80X400 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the rod at any position along its 400mm travel, providing a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is identical in both directions at 2268 N (0.5 MPa). Remember that this holding force is a separate metric from thrust; you must size the clamp's 3600 N capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's propulsion power.
A rod extending from both ends allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The lock engages only after the piston stops, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. Release requires balanced air pressure on both sides via the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. The variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; they do not hold the load.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC BSAI datasheet (ISO 15552). Operating pressure is 0.15–0.7 MPa (lower than a plain SAI). Port options: PT / G.
A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 2513 N | 2268 N |
| 0.7 MPa (max) | 3519 N | — |
Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.
Locks a 3600 N vertical load at any point in the 400mm stroke, preventing gravity drops during air pressure loss.
Freezes the dual-rod assembly securely mid-stroke so the workpiece stays rigid during secondary drilling or inspection.
The spring-applied clamp engages instantly upon air loss, holding the payload safely wherever it stopped.
Step down to the 63mm bore if your load requires less than 1402 N of thrust and 2200 N of holding grip, or move up if you need more. Choose this BSAID80X400 over a stroke-end-only SAIL model when you must freeze the load mid-travel. If position holding is entirely unnecessary, a plain SAID cylinder suffices. For this 400mm stroke, add an external guide to handle side loads, as the 25mm carbon steel rod and M20x1.5 thread provide robustness but cannot support overhung loads alone.
The clamp locks bidirectionally but only after the cylinder halts; it is not a dynamic brake. Safety-critical applications need an independent backup measure. To replace this unit, match the double-rod design, 80mm bore, 400mm stroke, PT ports (3/8 cylinder, G1/8 enclasp), and the BSAID mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2), which omits FB/CA/CB/CR. Add an -S magnet for CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.
Quick checklist
The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It locks the rod at any position along the stroke, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving load.
The clamp uses a separate G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly. An independent safety measure is required for human-safety loads.
