About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X80

The AirTAC BSAID80X80 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a built-in clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the 25 mm rod to hold the load at any position along the 80 mm stroke. The clamp delivers a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (0.5 MPa). You must size the holding force against your static load, as holding force and cylinder thrust are entirely separate quantities.

The dual-rod architecture lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. A third G1/8 enclasp port controls the unlock function, separate from the 3/8 cylinder ports. Note that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke end; the clamp itself is what secures the load. The clamp locks only after the rod stops and cannot brake a moving rod.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Dual-Side Assembly Tooling

Mounts a primary tool on one rod end and a counterweight or position flag on the opposite end.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X80 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock model when you need equal force both ways and a mounting surface on both ends. If you only need to hold at the stroke end, a plain SAIL80 cylinder suffices, but the BSAID80X80 is required for mid-stroke holding. If your load is light, step down to a 63 mm bore (1402 N thrust, 2200 N hold); if heavier, step up to 100 mm (3681 N thrust, 5500 N hold). The 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 thread handle high side loads well.

For safe operation, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston, or the rod can jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure. This configuration uses PT ports, no magnet, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB, CA, CB, CR).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X80 FAQ

It is a spring-applied, air-released mechanism that grips the 25 mm rod at any stroke position, providing a 3600 N static holding force. It locks only after the rod has stopped and cannot brake a moving load.

You must apply balanced air pressure to both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port before unlocking. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can move abruptly. Human-safety loads need an independent safety measure.
