About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X900S

The AirTAC BSAID80X900-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a dual-rod design and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers a bidirectional holding force of 3600 N, gripping the twin 25mm carbon steel rods to secure a load at any position along its 900mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (0.5 MPa), while the opposing rod is ideal for mounting a position flag or secondary guidance tool. It is crucial to distinguish this 3600 N static holding force from the cylinder's thrust—the clamp only maintains a stopped load and cannot brake a moving rod.

This model includes the -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors, fitting neatly into the extruded barrel's sensor groove. The clamping mechanism relies on a separate G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release the lock. Remember that the variable air cushions at the stroke ends only decelerate the piston; they do not hold the load. Furthermore, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped, and unlocking requires balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X900S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures a 900mm vertical lift platform at any intermediate height using 3600 N of holding force, preventing gravity-driven drops during air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds an opposing workpiece or fixture rigidly in place mid-stroke during machining, using the second rod for a counterweight to balance the tool.

shield

Emergency Mid-Stroke Stop

Maintains the exact position of a stopped dual-rod actuator during an emergency power-down, keeping the load safely clamped until air is restored.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X900S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80mm bore model when an application demands mid-stroke holding power that a plain SAI or SAID cannot provide, and where a SAIL's end-of-stroke-only lock is insufficient. If you need less holding capacity, the 63mm bore offers 1402 N pull thrust and a 2200 N clamp hold; stepping up to the 100mm bore yields 3681 N pull thrust and a 5500 N hold. Because this 900mm stroke is long and unsupported, an external guide is strongly recommended to manage side loads, despite the mechanical advantage of the large 25mm rod threads.

For replacements, verify the double-rod configuration, 80mm bore, 900mm stroke, and PT tapered port threads (3/8 cylinder ports, G1/8 enclasp port). The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Finally, if human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure, as the clamp cannot brake a moving rod and must be unlocked with balanced pressures.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X900S FAQ

The spring-applied clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It locks the double-rod at any position along the 900mm stroke, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving and cannot act as a brake.

The clamp is released via the G1/8 enclasp port using 0.15-0.7 MPa. To prevent the rod from jumping, air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced before unlocking. For human safety, an independent external measure is required.
