Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 300mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300

The AirTAC SAILB160X300 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism engages a lock pin when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the 40mm carbon steel rod without requiring continuous live pressure. In the 160mm bore class, it generates 10053N of pull force at 0.5MPa, making it suitable for heavy vertical load management.

Unlike a plain SAI cylinder, this unit provides true static load holding upon power loss. The variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end, ensuring the piston reaches the locking terminal precisely. For position sensing, the barrel includes dual sensor grooves compatible with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches, though a magnet is not specified for this configuration.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Secures heavy elevated platforms at the retracted stroke end, preventing sudden drops during a compressed air failure.

factory

Press Retention

Maintains massive clamping force on heavy industrial press workloads at the rod-in position without consuming continuous air.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Keeps heavy safety barriers firmly closed and locked at the retracted terminal until the release air is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore when an application requires moving 10053N pull force at 0.5MPa and securing it at the rod-in position; step down to a 125mm bore if your requirement is closer to 5734N pull. Choose this SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held at the retracted stroke end, whereas a SAILF variant holds at the extended end. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Because the lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, it cannot brake a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this unit, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. At 300mm stroke, incorporate external guide rails to prevent side-load damage to the seals. For human-safety critical overhead lifting, always add an independent mechanical safety measure alongside the lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300 FAQ

The 160mm bore generates 10053N pull force and 14074N push force at 0.7MPa. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold without live pressure; supply air to the release port or use the manual lever to unlock.
