Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 300mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300S

The AirTAC SAILB160X300-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. It features a carbon steel rod and a -S magnet for solid-state DMSE or reed CMSE sensor integration. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure.

Delivering 10053N pull force at 0.5MPa, this 160mm bore unit is built for heavy-duty holding. The variable air cushion at the locker end measures 28mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 50mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking hardware. For unlocking, operators can supply air to the release port for automatic operation or use the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures heavy elevated platforms in the retracted position instantly upon power loss, preventing gravity-driven drops.

factory

Press Hold Position

Maintains high-force clamping pressure at the stroke-end terminal during machining cycles without continuous air consumption.

shield

Heavy Gate Locking

Locks large industrial safety gates firmly in the closed position, requiring an active air signal to disengage and open.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore if your application requires a robust holding force; stepping down to a 125mm bore yields 5734N pull at 0.5MPa, while the larger 200mm bore provides 15080N. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position, whereas SAILF holds the extended rod-out state. If your cycle requires arresting the rod at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Remember that this SAIL lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: avoid fast-exhaust valves and use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock. For safety-critical suspended loads, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. At 300mm stroke, ensure external guide rails are used to manage side loads and preserve the carbon steel rod. Replacement matches require 160mm bore, 300mm stroke, back locker, PT ports, and the -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X300S FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, this 160mm bore cylinder provides 10053N of pull force and 14074N at 0.7MPa. The maximum push force is 18095N at 0.9MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It is unlocked automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via a lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke; for any-position locking, use BSAI.
